The east side is one of Santa Ana’s oldest neighborhoods.

The area is bounded by Cypress Avenue, Halladay Street, McFadden Avenue and First Street. It was settled in 1870.

The neighborhood includes a few scattered 1880s Victorian-style houses. Predominating the eastern half of the neighborhood are houses built in the 1920s in the Tudor and Spanish colonial styles. Almost all the houses were built before the 1940s.

Nelson Stafford, an early county pioneer, bought land in 1868 and built a house there soon after. The neighborhood rapidly became one of the city’s wealthiest. One sign of wealth: Stafford’s family owned Santa Ana’s first telegraph.
