THE MEN IN MY LIFE: MARILYN HORNE. With Jerry Hadley, Thomas Hampson, Samuel Ramey, Spiro Malas; American Theatre Orchestra, Paul Gemignani, conductor. BMG 09026-62647-2.

Operatic busmen’s holidays into the world of Broadway can be dangerous, but Horne and some of her men manage reasonably well.

Now that she has given up Rossini, the mezzo finds a velvety affinity for the likes of Gershwin, Porter, Rodgers and Kern in such solos as “The Man I Love,” “All the Things You Are” and “In the Still of the Night.”

In ensemble numbers, Hadley’s humor is apparent in his contributions, and the suave Hampson is as convincing in Porter as he is more characteristically in Mahler. Malas tries hard but has pitch problems, while Ramey is boring.
