BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Last No. 1 Pick Didn’t Work Out

Share

The last time the Angels had the first pick in the amateur draft was 1975, when they took Danny Goodwin, a catcher from Southern University who was hailed as the next Johnny Bench.

Four years earlier, Goodwin had been drafted by the Chicago White Sox, but decided to attend Southern instead of signing. He remains the only player selected first in two drafts.

The second time, Goodwin was selected ahead of such future standouts as Rick Cerone, taken by the New York Yankees, Andre Dawson (Montreal Expos), Glenn Hubbard (Atlanta), Lou Whitaker (Detroit) and Lee Smith (Chicago Cubs).

Goodwin played only 63 games for the Angels between 1975 and 1978 and batted .226 with three home runs and 18 runs batted in.
