BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Piazza Is Expected to Start Today
Dodger catcher Mike Piazza says it’s foolish for anyone to assume he’ll automatically regain his batting stroke, but after sitting out three weeks because of a torn thumb ligament, it’ll be a wondrous feeling just to be back in the lineup.
Piazza will be activated for today’s game against the New York Mets, ending a 24-day stint on the disabled list. The Dodgers were 8-14 in his absence.
“I’ve prepared myself for this day for the last three weeks,” said Piazza, who will be playing his first home game of the season. “They made it clear to me that they want me out there, and I’m ready. I’ve got the pain down to a minimum.
“I wouldn’t be playing if I wasn’t ready. I wouldn’t jeopardize the team or aggravate the injury just because of an ego thing.”
