An overhaul of the city’s main thoroughfare, Firestone Boulevard, is expected to begin by mid-July.

On Tuesday, the City Council is expected to approve a $2.9-million construction contract awarded to Sully-Miller Contracting Co. Four miles of the boulevard between Alameda Street and the city’s eastern limits will be repaired over 120 days. State and county funds will finance the project.

“The purpose of the project is to bring more business to the city by improving the aesthetics of the boulevard,” said Shafique Naiyer, the city’s capital improvement project manager.

Plans include repaving, installing new street signs and repairing curbs, gutters and traffic signals.

The street is one of the busiest in the nation, carrying an average of 70,000 vehicles daily. City officials hope to minimize the project’s impact on businesses by restricting construction from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays. In addition, work on the boulevard will be done one mile at a time.
