HUNTINGTON PARK : City Will Use Grant to Hire Two Officers
Add two cops to the beat.
The city has received a $150,000 Justice Department grant that will help pay for the hiring of two additional police officers.
Funded through last year’s $30-billion crime bill, the Cops Ahead grant--distributed over three years--will pay nearly 25% of the cost for the two officers. The city will pick up the remaining costs--estimated at about $170,000 annually. After three years, the city will assume all costs.
The city has 66 officers, about one per 1,000 residents. The national average is about 2 officers per 1,000, officials said.
