Cypress : Recall Ballot Might Include Other Issues

Share

The City Council is asking that one or more advisory measures be placed on the ballot if a special recall election is called.

The council asked city staff members to draft possible issues to put before the electorate and suggested two of its own: whether Cypress voters want a unified elementary-high school district and whether voters would favor buying industrial land for a park in the city’s southern end.

Residents angered by a council vote in September allowing a large carpet warehouse in southern Cypress recently initiated a recall drive against Mayor Cecilia L. Age, Councilwoman Gail H. Kerry and Councilman Walter K. Bowman. If recall backers gather enough voter signatures, state law requires a special election be called.

Recall petitions against Age and Kerry have already been completed and are being verified by the county registrar of voters. The petition against Bowman is still being circulated.

At the council’s meeting Monday night, Age said a special election, if required, would be held Nov. 7. She estimated the election will cost the city about $70,000.
