United Airlines now offers advanced digital phone service in its entire fleet of airplanes, according to GTE Airfone, which installed the service. The digital service, which allows laptop computer users to send and receive data in flight, also makes it possible to cruise the Internet at 33,000 feet. Other airlines are also installing the phones.

GTE Airfone said its advanced digital service is now in 750 jets. Spokeswoman Laura Littel said passengers generally pay $1.50 in connection charges and $1.50 a minute to use the service. Any laptop with a modem able to send and receive faxes or electronic mail should work from one of the phones, Littel said, because the system has an error-correction feature.
