Federal Officials Check Reports of Cigarette-Caused Illnesses: Michael Eriksen, director of the Office of Smoking and Health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said the agency is studying several dozen reports of incidents said to involve contaminated cigarettes made by Philip Morris. About 8 billion of the New York-based company’s cigarettes--sold under brand names such as Marlboro and Virginia Slims--were recalled on May 26 after a chemical used in making pesticides turned up in some filters.
