REMEMBERED: Quartz Hill High School students wore red ribbons, held a moment of silence and set aside empty chairs during Friday night’s graduation to remember fellow students who did not make it. . . . Two traffic accidents in May left two students dead and another in a coma. . . . Said Principal Susan Custer: “We wanted to do something that would give these students the recognition they deserve.”

LANDFILL: Opponents of the Lopez Canyon landfill near Lake View Terrace won a partial victory Friday when the Los Angeles Board of Public Works recommended extending the life of the dump by one year . . . instead of five. City Councilman Richard Alarcon made a key appearance before the panel, saying sanitation officials have overestimated the landfill’s capacity (B1).

MR. MANNERS: Matthew Hamel, above, graduated from kindergarten at Valley Schools in Van Nuys on Friday, and you can bet he did so politely. . . . The school is believed to have implemented the nation’s first course on manners. Lessons included “Respecting Elders” and “Whining vs. Requesting” (B3).

REBOUND: U.S. Commerce Secretary Ron Brown on Friday presented a check for $250,000 to Industrial Electronic Engineers Inc. of Van Nuys to help the company make the change from defense-related products to consumer goods. . . . The move was part of a project to help the economy rebound from defense downsizing (B4).

THANK JIMINY: When Woodland Hills resident Hank (yes, that’s her real name) Norton spied a cricket on her way to the California Lottery’s Big Spin last month, the retired engineer saw it as a lucky sign. Then the 68-year-old woman won $1 million. But another surprise was waiting outside. . . . “When the bus drivers heard that I’d won, they scurried around trying to find me the lucky cricket,” she said. . . . No one found the cricket, but you can see Norton on tonight’s Big Spin TV show.
