A Camarillo family dedicated to the community’s youth has been honored by the United Way of Ventura County for its service.

The McAvoy Chooljian family received the organization’s annual Milton M. Teague Award, which honors outstanding service volunteers.

Retired architect Amy McAvoy began the family’s tradition of public service through her work with Interface and the Camarillo Boys & Girls Club.

McAvoy’s son-in-law, Sol Chooljian, a computer software consultant, also has focused his energy on the Boys & Girls Club. And McAvoy’s daughter, Laura, served on the United Way board of directors for seven years.

United Way also commended the McAvoy Chooljian family for passing the spirit of giving on to their children David and Laura McAvoy Chooljian.

The Milton M. Teague Award is named in honor of the first chairman of the Ventura County War Chest, which evolved into the United Way of Ventura County.
