Suburbia and agriculture clashed in Santa Ana during an unusual cold spell in 1950.

With temperatures dropping into the 20s at night, the city’s orange grove owners were forced to use oil heaters to keep their trees alive.

But the heaters emitted thick smoke that created an ugly haze across the county. Santa Ana residents were angered because the smoke blackened their draperies, shelves and furniture.

Some homemakers even went to the County Board of Supervisors to demand action. One woman said the smoke made it necessary to clean her kitchen surfaces and white curtains several times a day.
