GOLF ROUNDUP : Sheehan Wins as LPGA Rivals Struggle

Patty Sheehan won the LPGA Rochester International for the fourth time in seven years, shooting a two-under-par 70 Sunday while most of her rivals struggled to match par.

Sheehan, who finished with a 10-under 278, won by four strokes over Sherri Steinhauer.

Steinhauer, who had mixed results with a new putter, closed with a 73 to finish at 282, one stroke ahead of Pam Wright of Scotland, whose 67 Sunday was the day’s best.

Sheehan remained successful at Locust Hill Country Club in Pittsford, N.Y., despite wayward tee shots, a two-week layoff and a tiring third round.

“I played good enough to win and that’s good enough for me,” said the 38-year-old Hall of Famer. “This was one of those weeks where you had to be patient.”

Sheehan won here in 1989, 1990 and 1992, then lost a three-way playoff in 1988, was second in 1993 and placed fourth last year.

Her lead closed to two strokes on the 14th hole, when Sheehan bogeyed after hooking her drive and Steinhauer sank a 20-foot putt for birdie. But Sheehan made an 18-foot birdie putt on the next hole, and locked up her victory with her fifth birdie on the 17th.

Tom Wargo shot a one-under 69 to win the windswept Dallas Reunion Senior PGA Pro-Am by seven strokes. Leading all the way, Wargo finished 64-64-69--197, 13-under, on the Oak Cliff Country Club course. It was his third victory in less than three years on the Senior PGA Tour.

Dave Eichelberger, six shots back entering the final round, closed the gap to two strokes on the front nine but a double bogey at the par-four 10th ended his threat. He closed with a 70 and shared second place at 204 with Dave Stockton, who had a 69.
