An 18-year-old who got into a dispute with another driver on the freeway was stabbed in the head with a pair of scissors so fiercely they had to be surgically removed, police said Friday.

Ricardo Delgado, 32, of Santa Ana was booked at Orange County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

Barry Politt of Garden Grove was taken to UCI Medical Center, where the scissors were removed from his head. Police said he was in stable condition.

The incident began about 5:40 p.m. Thursday during rush hour, when the two strangers were driving on the Garden Grove Freeway near Haster Street.

“They got in some type of beef coming down the freeway,” said Sgt. Dennis Ellsworth. “They got off the freeway and got in a fight.”

Witnesses who saw the attacker speed away gave his license plate number to police, who arrested Delgado at his home, Ellsworth said.

“We always tell people, if you get in a mishap on the freeway, don’t get upset and don’t start arguing with the other driver, because you don’t know what’s going to happen. They escalate and then they turn physical.”
