A Mission Viejo man, out on his routine early-morning jog, was struck and killed Friday by an 18-year-old driver who authorities said may have been dozing while traveling through the morning fog.

Jerome Francis Luckman, 56, an avid runner, was out at 4 a.m. for his usual run in his neighborhood, family members said.

“He jogged every morning from 4 to 5,” said his wife, Jo Ann Luckman. “For the past 12 years, he’d be out in the early morning without fail, running 2 1/2 to 5 miles on weekdays.”

About 4:20 a.m., Jerome Luckman was jogging east on Alicia Parkway in the bike lane when a car approached him from behind at an undetermined speed, Sheriff’s Lt. Dan Martini said.

Because of heavy fog, visibility was about 10 feet, Martini said.

The car drifted into the bike path and struck Luckman at the intersection of Trabuco Road. A second car also struck him, Martini said. Luckman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neither driver was cited, pending the outcome of the investigation, Martini said.
