BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Gwynn Sorry to Miss Nomo
Although most players would probably rejoice at the prospect of not having to face rookie pitcher Hideo Nomo, who has won his last five starts and leads the National League in strikeouts, San Diego right fielder Tony Gwynn is unhappy Nomo won’t face the Padres during the three-game series.
The Dodgers don’t play the Padres again until September, when they play seven games in the final two weeks of the season.
“Nomo’s been like nitro,” Gwynn said. “I’d rather face Nomo this series instead of having to miss him because we’ll have to wait until September to see him.
“If you haven’t faced a guy going into September it ain’t going to be easy. I don’t care how much video you’ve watched and how many times you’ve seen him pitch, it just ain’t the same until you get in that batter’s box.”

The Dodgers announced that they sold 12,129 tickets Monday. Attracted by the beach towel giveaway, it was the Dodgers’ largest walkup crowd ever.
