CAMARILLO : Road Reopened After Repair of Sinkhole

Workers repaired a Camarillo sinkhole that swallowed a car, and Santa Rosa Road was reopened to traffic Tuesday evening, officials said.

County officials said they expect no further problems in the area after a broken water main undermined a 25-foot section of Santa Rosa Road near Gerry Road. They reopened the road about 5 p.m.

“We’re knocking on wood that we don’t have any more problems,” said Butch Britt, deputy public works director for Ventura County. “Maybe we should be knocking on asphalt.”

Neighbors first noticed water on the roadway about 8 p.m. Sunday. Shortly afterward, Michelle Delgado attempted to drive across the rising water in a 1986 Mazda RX-7 that she had recently bought.

Just as she forded the pond, another car sped around her and the asphalt buckled, trapping Delgado. Neighbors helped pull her out of the car as it slowly sank.

The car was totaled, but Delgado escaped uninjured.

Britt said Camarillo’s sinkhole is nothing compared to two large sinkholes reported recently in Hollywood.

“This is small Ventura County and our sinkholes are small,” he said. “Let’s just hope it stays that way.”
