SANTA ANA : Schools Budget Has No Immediate Cuts
A $219-million budget approved by trustees of the Santa Ana Unified School District for 1995-96 calls for no immediate cuts, although some may be necessary, Controller Bob Giritz said.
The board’s major concerns for the upcoming fiscal year include achieving the required 2% reserve for contingencies and preparing for the impact of the district’s $5-million loss in the county’s failed investment fund, Trustee Audrey Yamagata-Noji said.
“It’s still very devastating. We did adopt the budget, but it’s not anything we feel really positive about,” she said.
Depending on what level of funding the state ultimately provides when its own budget is settled, the district may need to make cuts ranging from a few hundred thousand dollars to more than $1 million, Giritz said.
District staff is now researching potential cuts, although none have yet been identified. Those might be discussed at the board’s July 25 meeting. The revised final budget is expected to be completed by Aug. 22, Giritz said.
