At Least the Rest of the Matches Went Quietly

TIMES STAFF WRITER

On a day when Jeff Tarango’s outburst overshadowed even Andre Agassi, the rest of Saturday’s third-round Wimbledon matches wore on in obscurity and predictability.

Agassi, seeded No. 1, defeated a combative David Wheaton, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, to advance to the round of 16 next week.

Saturday’s temperatures were markedly cooler than Friday’s record heat. There are no matches today.

Third-seeded Boris Becker defeated Jan Siemerink, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, 6-4, and seventh-seeded Wayne Ferreira defeated Mark Woodforde, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4, 6-7 (7-5), 6-2.

Dick Norman of Belgium--who lost in qualifying and got into the main draw as a lucky loser--defeated Todd Woodbridge, 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Norman beat two former Wimbledon champions to get this far and added to that with his victory over Woodbridge, who is a two-time doubles champion.

On the women’s side, top-seeded Steffi Graf defeated Kristie Boogert, 6-1, 6-0; No. 4 Jana Novotna defeated Judith Wiesner, 7-5, 6-4; No. 6 Kimiko Date defeated Tami Whitlinger Jones, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3; No. 7 Lindsay Davenport defeated Christina Singer, 6-7 (10-8), 6-3, 6-2; Ines Gorrochategui defeated No. 10 Natasha Zvereva, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4; and 13th-seeded Mary Joe Fernandez defeated Miriam Oremans, 6-1, 6-2.

At first, Agassi struggled with the conditions on Centre Court.

“The court was more chewed up, so the bounces were a little bit more unpredictable, which didn’t help my return,” he said. “The wind was moving around, so I think it was just tough circumstances. And David plays kind of erratic but big tennis. You know, he hits big shots. Sometimes he misses, sometimes he makes it.”
