10 Suffer Minor Injuries in Fall From Cable Car
Ten people suffered minor injuries Monday when they fell from a cable car at a popular tourist stop, city railway officials and paramedics said.
Five were taken to hospitals and five were treated at the scene, said San Francisco Municipal Railway spokesman Alan Siegel.
“They were very minor--cuts, bruises,” said a paramedic dispatcher who identified himself only as Terry.
Siegel said the accident occurred near the intersection of Lombard and Hyde streets, near the top of the stretch of Lombard Street known as “the crookedest street in the world.” That stretch is currently closed for repairs.
The cable car was climbing the steep Hyde Street hill when it was forced to stopped unexpectedly as a construction worker pulled a hose from the tracks and a car halted abruptly in front of it. the cable car.
“The driver lost the cable and the car began to back down the hill,” Siegel said.
The driver dropped an emergency brake that stopped the cable car and several people fell off, Siegel said.
