Times Wire Reports

Jimmy Key, runner-up in last year’s American League Cy Young Award balloting, will undergo shoulder surgery Wednesday to repair a rotator cuff tear and won’t pitch for the New York Yankees for the rest of this season.

The surgery will be performed by James Andrews at Birmingham, Ala., Manager Buck Showalter said before Monday night’s game against the Chicago White Sox.

Key, 35-10 for the Yankees in 1993 and 1994, had arthroscopic surgery last October to remove a bone spur and clean up his left shoulder.

But the shoulder began to bother him this spring and the left-hander, 34, made only five starts and had a 1-2 record and 5.64 earned-run average. He was put on the disabled list May 20 because of inflammation and rotator tendinitis.

“With his work habits, we have every hope and some confidence he will be back next year, hopefully in spring training,” said Stuart Hershon, Yankee team physician.
