LOS ANGELES : MTA Lures Riders on ‘Fundays’

The MTA is offering such a deal.

Since Sunday, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority has allowed bus passengers who pay full fare to bring a guest for 50 cents. The regular fare is $1.35, or 90 cents for passengers who buy tokens at outlets located throughout Los Angeles.

To be eligible, passengers must have coupons that are available in newspapers, at MTA Customer Service Centers and at locations where the MTA sells passes. And the 50-cent fare is good only on Sundays and holidays--which the MTA has dubbed “Fundays.”

The Fundays program is part of a plan to win back riders who abandoned the buses after the transportation agency increased fares last year. Ridership has declined to 1.1 million a day from 1.5 million in the mid-1980s, said Andrea Greene, MTA spokeswoman.
