SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

In the world of auto racing, it seems that whenever a driver gets on a hot streak, good luck seems to follow.

For Greg Voigt of Goleta, the axiom held true, as he got a couple of breaks and grabbed his fifth Street Stock victory of the season before a crowd of 797 in Friday night’s 20-lap main event at Ventura Raceway.

Voigt, who won for the second consecutive week, started eighth and worked his way to sixth before getting trapped in a three-car collision with Jim Firisich of Port Hueneme and Al Adam of Westlake Village on the fourth lap.

Pole-sitter Jason Secor of Ventura was leading at the time, but yielded to Joel Remmenga of Camarillo on the eighth lap.

Voigt passed Secor one lap later, and luck intervened when Remmenga pulled off the track with a flat tire during a caution flag on the 12th lap, giving defending champion Paul Moore second place.

Voigt got another break when a cloud of steam erupted from under the hood of Moore’s Camaro on a 17th-lap caution flag.

“You always need luck,” Voigt said. “I don’t care who you are, you need luck on your side.”

In the 20-lap Modified feature, Ryan Cole won for the third time at the quarter-mile clay oval.

Cole, a Santa Maria resident, has 17 victories in 42 International Motor Contest Assn. races this year and leads the points standings.

Richard Webster of Camarillo earned his second consecutive Mini Stock victory and his third of the year, taking the lead on the third lap of the 15-lap main event and not looking back.

James Brown of Ventura got his first victory in the 15-lap Pony Stock main event.
