Liu Wins Open Title

Guoliang Liu of China won the U.S. Table Tennis Open in front of about 3,500 Sunday at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Liu, top-seeded in the tournament, beat Zhe Feng, also of China, 21-15, 15-21, 22-20, 21-16, in the final. Liu, ranked sixth in the world, earned $6,000 for the championship.

Liu advanced to the final by beating Jim Butler, 17-21, 21-16, 21-17, 21-17, in one semifinal. Butler, from Augusta, Ga., is the first American to reach a major international semifinal in two years.

Feng reached the final by defeating Peng Lung Chiang of Taipei, 21-10, 21-18, 21-19.

Earlier in the tournament, Feng and Liu won the men’s doubles title.

In the women’s final, Lijuan Geng of Canada, the top-seeded player, beat second-seeded Bettine Vriesekoop of the Netherlands, 21-17, 19-21, 21-15, 21-10. Geng, who won $4,000, is ranked seventh in the world.
