Arizona Brush Fire Nearly Contained

FOUNTAIN HILLS, Ariz. — Firefighters took advantage of low wind Monday to mop up a desert brush fire that had blackened 20,000 acres and burned to within a mile of this affluent suburb.
The fire northeast of Phoenix was 90% contained Monday morning, said Jim Payne, a spokesman for the various city and state agencies fighting the fire. The blaze apparently was sparked by lightning last week.
“No one is worried about Fountain Hills any more,” said Glenn Brown, a district chief with the privately owned Rural-Metro Fire Department. “As long as the wind stays in our favor, we’re in good shape.”
As many as 500 firefighters have fought the blaze.
