BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Boskie Still Hurting, Goes on 15-Day DL

The Angels, already in the market for a right-handed starter, lost their best one Sunday when Shawn Boskie was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of an inflamed elbow.

Boskie (6-2), hoping to go through his normal between-starts workout, experienced discomfort after throwing for about five minutes Sunday morning. He returned to Los Angeles to be examined by Lewis Yocum, team physician.

Left-handed reliever Mark Holzemer will be recalled from triple-A Vancouver today to take Boskie’s roster spot, and right-hander Russ Springer will continue to start for Boskie.

Will this intensify the Angels’ pursuit of Minnesota Twin pitcher Kevin Tapani and other right-handed starters?

“No, but the search will continue,” said Tim Mead, assistant general manager.

Third baseman Tony Phillips wasn’t much of a factor offensively--he had only one hit in 10 at-bats in the doubleheader sweep of the Tigers. But his outstanding defensive play in the seventh inning of the first game kept the Angels close and probably gave starter Chuck Finley the victory.

With runners on second and third and two out, Phillips made a back-hand grab of Travis Fryman’s grounder and threw him out, preventing the Tigers from expanding their 4-2 lead.

“If I don’t get Fryman out I’m gone, and who knows what would have happened,” said Finley, who allowed four runs on seven hits and threw 125 pitches.

The Angels rallied with four runs in the top of the eighth, Troy Percival retired the Tigers in order in the bottom of the eighth, and Lee Smith pitched the ninth for his 22nd save.

It was this kind of day for the Tigers Sunday: Center fielder Chad Curtis tried to throw a warm-up ball into the outfield bleachers in the first game. He came up a little short, hitting the outfield wall.

In the second game, Fryman tried to go from first to third on Cecil Fielder’s first-inning single. One problem: Curtis had to hold near second until the liner cleared second baseman Rex Hudler’s glove, and Curtis stopped at third.

Two Tigers were caught on third base and it added up to one out, as Curtis was thrown out in a rundown. Then, in the third inning, left fielder Franklin Stubbs dislocated his right shoulder diving for Edmonds’ three-run double.
