BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Mondesi Caught Stealing to End Streak

Share

Dodger right fielder Raul Mondesi, who had a successful string of 18 consecutive stolen bases dating back to last season, was caught stealing at second base in the second inning by Marlin catcher Charles Johnson.

“I got a good jump, but the throw was right there,” Mondesi said. “Nobody can steal 100 bases straight. I’ve got to keep working.”

Mondesi may have made a mistake by trying to run on Marlins pitcher Pat Rapp, who was Florida’s toughest pitcher to run on last season. Marlins’ catchers caught 14 of 22 runners (64%) with Rapp pitching and Rapp caught three others.

“I didn’t know Mondesi has a streak going,” Johnson said. “How many was it? Eighteen, wow!”

Former Dodger pitching great Sandy Koufax phoned pitcher Ramon Martinez to congratulate him on his no-hitter last Friday.

“It was a big thrill to hear from him,” Martinez said.

Catcher Mike Piazza, walked intentionally to load the bases in the sixth inning, has been walked intentionally seven times this season. By comparison, the Milwaukee Brewers had a total of nine intentional walks going into Sunday’s action.
