Top Four Players Gain Third Round at Hardcourt Event

The top four seeded players won second-round matches at the U.S. Tennis Assn. Men’s 50 Hardcourt championships Tuesday at Lindborg Racquet Club in Huntington Beach.

Top-seeded Charlie Hoeveler of Ross beat Brad Traister of Beverly Hills by default; No. 2 Leland Housman of San Diego beat Steve Koenigsberg of Los Angeles, 6-2, 6-3; No. 3 Larry Rabineau of Los Angeles beat Dave Lougee of Palo Alto, 7-6, 7-5, and No. 4 Niesi Sie of Westlake Village beat Rocky Ford of Hesperia, 7-6, 6-2.

Mike Fazio, Robert Kisner and Wes Simmons, all of Huntington Beach, Woody Brooks of Newport Beach, Mike Meissenburg of Costa Mesa and Terry Ehlers of San Clemente also were second-round winners.

Terry Noe of Fullerton and Brian Ricketts, who played at Cypress College, advanced to match play after the second round of qualifying at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championships on the 6,807-yard, par-71 Stow Acres Country Club course in Stow, Mass.

Noe shot 71 for a two-round total of 143. Ricketts also shot 71 for a two-day total of 144. The cut for the top 64 players came at 146.

Fountain Valley outfielder Greg Hanoian has signed a letter of intent to play baseball at USC, Baron Coach Ron La Ruffa said Tuesday.

Hanoian hit .436 with two home runs and 36 runs batted in in helping the Barons win their second consecutive Southern Section Division I championship. He played his sophomore and junior seasons at Edison.
