Archi Cianfrocco, called up from the minors after the Padres voted not to put a replacement player on their roster, hit a grand slam and drove in six runs as San Diego rallied to defeat the Braves, 9-6, Friday night at Atlanta.

Cianfrocco, batting for only the second time since his promotion Wednesday, connected for a pinch-hit grand slam in the eighth inning for a 6-4 lead. He added a two-run single in the ninth.

Needing to fill a roster spot, Padre General Manager Randy Smith recently asked his team how it felt about outfielder Ira Smith, who played for San Diego’s replacement club in spring training. The Padres voted against the move, and Smith called up Cianfrocco, who refused to break ranks in the exhibition season.

The last Padre player to drive in six runs was Gary Sheffield on June 18, 1992.

New York 12, Colorado 1--Pete Harnisch pitched seven shutout innings and the Mets broke open the game with an eight-run eighth at Denver.

Jose Vizcaino drove in three runs and Joe Orsulak had four of the Mets’ 18 hits.

Harnisch (2-7) and Jerry DiPoto combined to shut out the Rockies until Larry Walker’s RBI single in the ninth.

Harnisch scattered six hits, struck out seven and walked none in winning for the first time in nine starts.

Cincinnati 10, Chicago 1--The Reds learned of their eight-player trade, then went out and hit four homers--two by Benito Santiago--to beat the Cubs at Cincinnati.

The Reds moved to strengthen their depleted pitching staff by trading center fielder Deion Sanders and four minor leaguers to the San Francisco Giants half an hour before the game. The Reds received pitchers Mark Portugal and Dave Burba and outfielder Darren Lewis.

All four homers--Santiago’s and one each by Barry Larkin and Bret Boone--landed in left field near banners bearing Sanders’ name.

Pete Schourek (10-4) scattered four hits in seven innings for his sixth consecutive victory.

San Francisco 6, Houston 3--Steve Scarsone tripled home the go-ahead run in the sixth inning at Houston and the Giants ended a four-game losing streak.

Mark Leiter (4-6) broke a five-game losing streak, winning for the first time since June 4 against Philadelphia. He gave up three runs and eight hits in eight innings. Rod Beck pitched the ninth for his 16th save.

Philadelphia 7, St. Louis 0--Sid Fernandez struck out 10 and walked none in six innings for his first victory in more than a year as the Phillies won at Philadelphia.

Fernandez, whose last victory was July 15, 1994, against the Angels when he was pitching for Baltimore, gave up consecutive singles in the first, then retired 15 batters in a row.

Fernandez (1-1) gave up only three hits in his second start since being signed by the Phillies on July 13 after being waived by the Orioles on July 9.

Pittsburgh 7, Montreal 6--Kevin Young, whose two-out double in the ninth inning tied the score, drew a bases-loaded walk from Greg Harris in the 12th, giving the Pirates the victory at Pittsburgh.

Young drove in five runs. He hit a two-run homer against Carlos Perez in the fifth and made it 6-6 with two-run double against Mel Rojas in the ninth, but struck out with the bases loaded in the 10th.

Jeff King walked to open the 12th. Harris threw wildly on Dave Clark’s potential double-play grounder and Carlos Garcia was walked intentionally to load the bases. Mark Parent struck out before Young walked.
