Jimmy Powell, a 60-year-old Dallas native who now lives in La Quinta, shot a six-under-par 66 Saturday at the First of America Classic in Ada, Mich., to put himself in position to make Senior PGA Tour history.

Powell’s 10-under 134 earned him $15,000 for winning the Super Senior portion--for those golfers 60 and older--of the tournament, and it also gave him a two-shot lead over Babe Hiskey in the 54-hole regular tournament.

Since the Super Senior competition began eight years ago, no golfer has won both portions.

Carin Hjalmarsson of Sweden, leader of the LPGA rookie standings, stormed into the lead at the Big Apple Classic at New Rochelle, N.Y., with a six-under 65.

Hjalmarsson had seven birdies and a bogey in surging past faltering Michelle McGann and into a one-stroke lead at eight-under 205. McGann, who held a four-stroke lead through two rounds, skied to a 74 in hot, humid conditions at Wykagl Country Club and slipped to 208.

Hjalmarsson, 24, is seeking Sweden’s second consecutive women’s golf victory. Last week, Annika Sorenstam of Sweden, who played at the University of Arizona and was the 1991 NCAA champion, won the U.S. Open.

Hjalmarsson played on the European and Asian tours before joining the LPGA circuit this year. Her best finish has been a seventh at the Pinewild Championship in April.

Dicky Thompson, who flirted with the second-round lead at the Deposit Guaranty Classic before ending with two bogeys, finished the third round with consecutive birdies to take a one-stroke lead over Bob Gilder and Dicky Pride with a four-under 68 at Madison, Miss.
