Port Settles Suit by Environmental Groups Over Pollution in Bay

Share

Several environmental groups announced Wednesday that they have settled a federal lawsuit over pollution spread by rainwater at the Port of Long Beach.

The Natural Resources Defense Council, Heal the Bay and Santa Monica BayKeeper filed a lawsuit in 1994 under a provision of the federal Clean Water Act.

They contended that the port and its tenants transported petroleum-based fuel and other materials in a manner that led to significant pollution after it combined with rainwater.

Under the settlement, which still must be approved by a federal judge, the port agreed to improve its pollution monitoring and develop a plan to control storm water runoff. The port also will be required to hire a consultant to implement improvements and help evaluate its progress.
