Heat Bakes Bay Area; 99-Degree Reading in S.F. Shatters Record
Bay Area residents got a feel of what summer is like for the rest of the world Sunday when a stiff breeze whisked away clouds and fog and let temperatures soar to record highs.
San Francisco hit 99 degrees, shattering the record for the day of 85. In Alameda, a 97-degree reading broke the 1977 record of 89 degrees.
“It was unusually hot at the coast,” said John Burkhardt with the National Weather Service. “It was just regularly hot everywhere else.”
Temperatures elsewhere in Northern California hit the 90s and low 100s, normal for areas off the coast this time of year, Burkhardt said. The hot, dry, windy weather prompted a fire-danger warning from the California Department of Forestry.
