4.2 Quake Hits Near Yucca Site

Share

A magnitude 4.2 earthquake struck early Monday in a desolate area 15 miles north of Yucca Mountain, which is being studied as a possible federal nuclear waste storage site, scientists at the University of Nevada-Reno’s Seismological Laboratory reported. There was neither damage nor injuries.

About 200 earthquakes have been reported since 1978 in the immediate vicinity of Monday’s temblor, but none were as strong. A magnitude 5.6 earthquake occurred, however, in an area east of Yucca Mountain in 1992, after the major Landers earthquake.
