LAGUNA NIGUEL : Council Acts on Perilous Intersection

Share

Hoping to reduce the possibility of serious accidents in a neighborhood off busy Pacific Island Drive, the City Council voted this week to prohibit left turns from Casalero Drive onto Pacific Island.

Concerned about two recent accidents at the intersection, residents pushed for installation of a traffic light.

Andrew Westerfield said he knows that installing a traffic light would be costly but said: “What price do you put on human life?”

The council indicated that the traffic signal proposal will be sent to the Traffic Commission.

Council members also considered ways to reduce speed on Pacific Island, which runs up and down a steep hill.

Councilman Eddie Rose suggested reducing the speed limit to 35 m.p.h. from 45 m.p.h. would discourage speeders. But Mayor Mark Goodman disagreed, saying, “Not the speeders I’ve seen. . . . They drive like they’re in Le Mans.”

Residents said the problem is not only the steep hill but limited visibility because of a sharp curve.
