The county Board of Supervisors has scheduled a Tuesday public hearing on a long-awaited plan to expand the Theo Lacy Branch Jail in Orange.

The proposal calls for expanding the jail on The City Drive from 1,326 to 2,986 beds.

As part of the pact agreed upon in May, the city will drop a lawsuit challenging the expansion in exchange for an economic incentive package and a waiver from jail booking fees, said Orange Mayor Joanne Coontz.

The economic incentive package will help the city in its efforts to expand The City shopping mall nearby, she added.

Coontz said Friday that the county also plans to increase security in the area.

“We are satisfied with the agreement,” she said.

Also on Tuesday, the Board of Supervisors is scheduled to make appointments to a panel working on a reuse plan for El Toro Marine Corps Air Station. The Pentagon plans to close the base at the end of the decade.

The board meeting begins at 9:30 a.m. at the county Hall of Administration, 10 Civic Center Plaza, Santa Ana.
