HER FAULT? The county’s bankruptcy has long tentacles. Harriett Wieder retired as a county supervisor eight months ago, but some still want to see her pay politically for it. . . . Fifty Orange County activists have signed a petition asking President Bill Clinton to reconsider his plan to appoint Wieder to the board of a federal agency on efficiency. . . . Their letter to Clinton: “Apparently you are unaware of her reputation here for inadequate knowledge of financial management, and negligence of oversight.”

BUILDING BRIDGES: If Hollywood taught you most of what you know about Native Americans, you might check out the county fairgrounds in Costa Mesa today or tomorrow. More than 500 dancers from around the country will entertain at the 27th annual powwow hosted by the Southern California Indian Center. The idea, says spokeswoman Paula Starr, “is to share and foster our culture. Otherwise, how do we bridge the gap of diversity in our country?” . . . Tickets range from $1 to $5.

COOL TIME: If you want surf champ Kelly Slater’s autograph today, expect to wait in line. Slater, here for the U.S. Open of Surfing, will sign for fans at the Huntington Surf and Sport on Pacific Coast Highway in Huntington Beach at 1 p.m. The store, unprepared for the crowd that swarmed Slater last year, has built him a platform to give him room and make the line run smoother. . . . “It’ll be a long line, mostly girls,” says a store spokesman. “But really, there’ll be all kinds of people. He’s a cool guy.”
