BEACH VOLLEYBALL : Two Tournaments to Begin Today
The Long Beach Invitational begins today at 10 a.m., featuring two elements that are somewhat rare on the Women’s Professional Beach Volleyball Tour: concrete and single-elimination play.
Sand has been brought in to make a court over the concrete on the Promenade, which is less than a mile from the beach.
The single-elimination format will be used for the first time in the WPVA’s nine-year history.
The top eight teams received a bye in today’s first-round and will play in the second round Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. The final three rounds will be held Sunday beginning at 9 a.m.
Holly McPeak and Nancy Reno, who have won the last five tournaments on the tour are top-seeded.
On the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals tour, top-ranked Mike Dodd and Mike Whitmarsh will head the field in the 64-team $100,000 Miller Lite Manhattan Beach Open today through Sunday near the pier. Dodd, almost 38, is the oldest player on the tour.
