ORANGE : Meals Program to Get Permanent Location
A program that serves meals to the city’s homeless has a permanent location, thanks to a grant from the St. Joseph Health System Foundation.
Orange Cares, comprising churches, nonprofit groups and government agencies, received a check for $35,000 from the foundation to buy two modular buildings that community activist Mary McAnena has been using as a kitchen and dining room to feed the homeless.
At one time McAnena served the meals in Hart Park, but was asked to leave because of neighbor complaints, said Scott Mather, president of Orange Cares.
The group then leased two modular units at 517 W. Struck St., near the police station, for McAnena to continue offering her hot lunches.
Mather said the group had been spending about $1,200 to $1,400 a month to lease the units, which it will now be able to buy.
About 75 of the city’s homeless seek a hot meal on any given day, he said.
