Jack Oliver; Retired Teacher

Jack Oliver, a retired teacher with the Ojai Valley Unified School District, died Monday in a Ventura hospital after a long illness. He was 70.

Oliver was born June 9, 1925, in Sioux City, Iowa, and was a resident of Ventura County for 26 years.

An instructor for 30 years, Oliver spent 19 years teaching in Ojai Valley schools before retiring. He was a member of the California Retired Teachers Assn., Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ventura and Veterans of Foreign Wars in Beaverdale, Iowa. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and he was an avid reader who enjoyed travel.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; a daughter, Ellen Schulz of Midland, Tex.; a son, Jack Charles Oliver of Bakersfield; his mother, Aleine Oliver of Richardson, Tex.; a sister, Bette Czarnecki of Richardson; granddaughters Jessica and Allison Schulz, both of Midland, and Sarah and Arielle Oliver, both of Bakersfield, and a grandson, Ben Oliver of Bakersfield.

He was preceded in death by a son, James Oliver, in 1987.

A Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Ted Mayr Funeral Home, Ventura. Funeral Mass will be at 8:30 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with Msgr. Arnold Biedermann officiating. Burial will follow at Ivy Lawn Cemetery, Ventura.
