PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : INTERCONFERENCE : Carter Injured After Three Plays

Share

The Cincinnati Bengals lost prized rookie Ki-Jana Carter on their first possession and lost the game soon after. Scott Mitchell guided Detroit to scores the first three times it had the ball and the Lions rolled to a 20-13 exhibition victory at Pontiac, Mich.

Carter, who suffered a slight Achilles’ tendon strain during training camp, made his NFL debut, but the No. 1 draft pick from Penn State was tackled high by Robert Porcher on his third carry and went down with a twisted left knee.

Carter, who had zero yards on three rushes, was on the sidelines in street clothes during the second half. The team indicated Carter would play against the New York Jets next Friday night.

Kelvin Martin returned a punt 83 yards for a touchdown as the Philadelphia Eagles routed the New England Patriots, 31-7, at Philadelphia.

Randall Cunningham, who played into the third quarter, was mostly effective running the Eagles’ new “West Coast” offense, despite completing only seven of 20 passes for 104 yards and a touchdown.

Drew Bledsoe left the game after New England’s first series, but returned and played until the fourth quarter, finishing 16 for 32 for 161 yards and a touchdown.
