ANAHEIM : City May Seek Proposals for Center Expansion
The City Council on Tuesday will consider whether to authorize a search for an architectural firm to provide master planning and design drawings for a proposed expansion of the Anaheim Convention Center.
If the council gives its approval, the city would begin soliciting proposals from nationally recognized architectural firms with convention center experience, according to a city staff report.
A study conducted by one of the nation’s top accounting firms revealed this week that the 28-year-old Anaheim Convention Center needs a major expansion if it is to remain competitive in the tourism industry.
The study recommends that the facility expand its exhibit space by 100,000 square feet and its meeting space by 58,800 to 98,800 square feet. It also suggests adding a ballroom to the building, which already has nine exhibit halls and a 9,000-seat arena.
The study, conducted by Coopers & Lybrand, was ordered by the council in February. It analyzed the financial feasibility of expanding the city-owned facility, which is across the street from Disneyland. The Anaheim Convention Center was previously expanded in 1974, 1982, 1990 and 1993.
On Tuesday, the council will also hold a 2 p.m. public workshop to discuss the details of the Coopers & Lybrand analysis.
