Unseeded Mats Wilander delighted his new neighbors Friday, upsetting Marc Rosset, 6-7 (10-8), 7-5, 7-5, in the quarterfinals of the Volvo International tennis tournament at New Haven, Conn.
Wilander, a native of Sweden who resides in Greenwich, Conn., overcame sixth-seeded Rosset in a late afternoon match that featured numerous extended rallies. He advanced to a semifinal match against top-seeded Andre Agassi, who beat seventh-seeded Sergi Bruguera, 6-4, 6-1.
“It’s the kind of match that has a lot of twists and turns, like the one yesterday,” Wilander said.
Wilander, 30 and a former No. 1 player who is now ranked 61st, had endured a grueling match of nearly three hours against Kenneth Carlsen on Thursday.
In another quarterfinal match, Richard Krajecik beat defending champion Boris Becker, 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), to advance to a semifinal match against Yevgeny Kafelnikov.
