A man was killed Saturday night when he was struck by a Metro Blue Line train in Long Beach near the Spring Street station at Del Mar Avenue, authorities said.

The man, described as an African American in his 40s, appeared to leap in front of the train just before 7:30 p.m., said Sgt. Javier Ramos of the Metropolitan Transit Authority police.

“The operator of the train said the man jumped in front of the train,” Ramos said.

The train was headed south from Los Angeles to downtown Long Beach. It was delayed for about 1 1/2 hours, Ramos said.
