ORANGE COUNTY ALMANAC : Popular Point for Smugglers
Dana Point in the early 1900s was a haven for smugglers, who bought liquor from ships offshore.
At the first sight of approaching federal agents, smugglers would sink their craft, evidence and all, by pulling large plugs in the bottoms of the small boats. Each boat towed a dinghy in which the smugglers made their way back to shore.
