ORANGE COUNTY ALMANAC : Haunted Ruins
Ghost stories about Mission San Juan Capistrano tell of a young Native American ordered to walk before parishioners carrying a candle as punishment for meeting a young man she had been forbidden to see.
The day her penance was to begin, she died in an earthquake that razed the stone church. Legend says her face can be seen by moonlight in the ruins.
