ROLLER HOCKEY PLAYOFFS : San Jose Goalie Gustafson Helps Rhinos Stop Bullfrogs
The San Jose Rhinos were able to keep the Bullfrogs off balance for most of the game Thursday to help them defeat Anaheim, 11-4, in the first game of a two-game series in a Roller Hockey International Western Conference playoff game before 2,744 at San Jose.
The Bullfrogs (19-4-1) will play the Rhinos (13-11) at The Pond of Anaheim on Saturday. If the Bullfrogs win, a mini-game will determine who will play the Eastern champion.
Rhino goalie Jon Gustafson was the main component behind San Jose’s victory, stopping 34 Bullfrog shots.
In addition, a strong San Jose defense was able to pester the normally high-scoring Bullfrogs.
Mark Woolf led the Rhinos with two goals and five assists.
Though the Bullfrogs appeared they would dominate at the start of the game after Victor Gervais scored in the first 30 seconds, the Rhinos came back to take a 4-1 lead after the first quarter.
The Rhinos scored two more goals in the second quarter and finished with five goals in the fourth quarter.
Besides Gervais, Rick Judson, Daniel Shank and Darren Banks were the only Bullfrogs able to get the puck past Gustafson.
