BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : McGwire Back From Disabled List
The Oakland Athletics activated Mark McGwire from the disabled list and optioned right-handed pitcher John Wasdin to Edmonton of the Pacific Coast League.
McGwire had been on the disabled list since Aug. 5 because of a sore lower back. He also was on the disabled list from July 18 to Aug. 2 because of a deep bruise in his left foot.

The Boston Red Sox activated left-handed pitcher Zane Smith from the disabled list and designated infielder Juan Bell for assignment.
Smith started Saturday’s game against Oakland and gave up six runs in two-plus innings.
