SIMI VALLEY : Train Hits Empty Car; No One Hurt

A Metrolink train with about 50 passengers headed to the Ventura County Fair on Sunday slammed into an empty car left on the tracks in Simi Valley, destroying the car and delaying the train by about 25 minutes.

The woman driver of the car was traveling south on Sycamore Drive near Los Angeles Avenue when it stopped on the tracks for an unknown reason, Simi Valley police said. Her identity is unknown.

The train had just left the Simi Valley station and was traveling about 45 m.p.h. when it hit the car just after 4 p.m.

The engineer repeatedly blew his horn to warn the car off the tracks and applied his brakes before the collision, Metrolink spokesman Peter Hidalgo said.

The impact did not seriously damage the six-car train and there were no injuries.

“The best description is it’s like a mid-size sedan running over a soda pop can--it has almost no effect,” Hidalgo said.
