A U-turn on a ramp leading to the Ventura Freeway resulted in a collision with a bus and the death of a Ventura woman Monday morning, the California Highway Patrol reported.

CHP officials said Floyd Engel, 58, of Ventura was entering the northbound freeway from West Main Street near the Ventura Beach RV Resort about 11 a.m. For unknown reasons, he tried to turn around on the on-ramp as he entered the freeway, officials said.

As Engel turned his 1983 Renault Alliance, it was struck on the driver’s side by a converted bus driven by James Brumit, 21, of Ventura.

The bus pushed the vehicle 145 feet up the freeway ramp, throwing Mardelle Lou Mason-Engel, 64, a passenger in the car, around inside. She was not wearing a seat belt.

The Engels were taken to Ventura County Medical Center, where Mardelle was pronounced dead. Floyd Engel remained in critical condition at the county hospital.

Brumit escaped with moderate injuries.

CHP officers are still investigating the accident.
