BUENA PARK : Having a Really Horrible Face Day

In a reverse of the typical make-over, six beauties were transformed into beasts in a matter of hours Tuesday at Knott’s Berry Farm.

The contestants in the Miss California Teen U.S.A and Miss California U.S.A. pageants were subjected to “the most elaborate monster makeup we use for the full haunt,” said Knott’s spokesman Bob Ochsner. “We made [them] into the most gruesome monsters we have in the park.”

The contestants, who will compete in Long Beach on Saturday for state titles, agreed to the monster make-over as part of a promotion for Knott’s annual Scary Farm Halloween Haunt.

The event, which starts Oct. 6 and ends Halloween night, is usually sold out well in advance, park officials said. Tickets for this year’s festivities go on sale Friday.

Hundreds of temporary employees become monsters for the haunting season with help from Cal State Fullerton art and cosmetology students, who use latex-foam prosthetics and heavy make-up for the transformations. As many as 20 artists might help to create a single monster.

“It is not entirely easy to be a monster,” Ochsner said. “It’s very demanding work.”
